NDIS Rights in Practice: Access, Privacy & Safe Support
Know what to ask for—and how to respond when supports fail
Rights that show up daily: access, choice & respect
Rights that show up daily: access, choice & respect
In everyday NDIS life, three rights matter again and again: access, choice, and respect. Access means you can get information and supports you need in a way you understand, without barriers. Choice means you have a say in how supports are provided, who provides them (within availability), and how goals are worked on. Respect means your identity, culture, preferences, and communication needs are valued every day—not just during planning meetings.
To practise these rights, start with clear communication. Ask for information about supports, supports providers, appointments, costs (if any), and changes in advance. If you need an interpreter, easy-read materials, or help understanding forms and letters, request it. When you’re making decisions, you can also ask for options: “What choices do I have?” and “What happens if I don’t want that?” If you’re using plan management through MyMoney NDIS (www.planmanager.net.au), you can still be involved in decisions about support types and goals—plan management just helps with handling payments, not taking choices away.
Choosing a provider is part of exercising your rights. Compare providers based on their experience, communication style, availability, and how they handle feedback and changes. If you’re unsure, My Care Finders can help you compare providers and find options that better match your needs and preferences.
Key takeaway: You don’t have to “just accept” what’s offered. You can ask for options, request adjustments, and expect respectful support every time.
If something feels wrong—missed appointments, poor communication, or disrespect—address it early and document what happened (dates, times, who you spoke with, and what was agreed). You can raise concerns with the provider, request a review of the support approach, and ask for a different worker or service arrangement if it’s not working. Remember: access, choice and respect are rights you can use in daily moments.
