Step 1: From Goals to Specific Support Needs

The first step is to move from broad NDIS goals like "increase my independence" to the exact types of support you need. Your plan outlines your funding across different support categories. Break your goals down into these support types:

  • Capacity Building Supports: This includes therapy (like OT, speech, psychology), support coordination, or life skills training. Ask: "What specific skill do I want to develop?"
  • Core Supports: This covers assistance with daily life (personal care, community access), consumables, and transport. Ask: "What practical help do I need to live my life?"
  • Capital Supports: This is for assistive technology (AT) like wheelchairs or communication devices, and home modifications. Ask: "What equipment or changes will reduce my barriers?"

By naming the specific support type, you can immediately filter providers. A famous provider might not specialise in your exact need, while a smaller, local one might be the perfect expert.
