The short answer
- Plan-managed = you can use registered or unregistered providers.
- Your plan manager pays invoices; they do not choose your providers for you.
- You are not restricted to any single “preferred” list.
- Plan management is funded separately and free to you — it does not reduce other budgets.
Step by step
- 1
Search and shortlist providers
Use a directory to filter by state, suburb and support type. Because you are plan-managed you can consider both registered and unregistered providers, so your options are wide.
- 2
Check fit and availability
Confirm each shortlisted provider delivers what you need, is taking new clients, and is comfortable invoicing a plan manager (most are). Compare fees within the NDIS price limits.
- 3
Agree the service and connect your plan manager
Sign a service agreement, then give the provider your plan manager’s invoicing details so payments flow smoothly. You stay in control of who delivers your supports.
- 4
Change providers whenever you need
If a provider is not working out, you can switch — your funding is yours. Just let your plan manager know so invoices are paid to the new provider.

Common follow-up questions
Can a plan-managed participant use any provider?
Yes. If you are plan-managed you can use both NDIS-registered and unregistered providers. Your plan manager simply pays the invoices from your plan. You are not limited to a set list, and you choose who delivers your supports.
Does my plan manager choose my providers?
No. Your plan manager handles the invoicing and claiming, not the choosing. The choice of providers is yours. If a plan manager pressures you toward particular providers, you are free to choose others — or to change plan managers.
Does plan management cost me anything?
Plan management is a separate funded support in your plan and is free to you — it does not come out of your other budgets. It gives you the flexibility to use registered and unregistered providers while someone else handles the paperwork.
