Frequently asked questions about NDIS Plan Management

Answers grounded in the NDIA Operational Guidelines and the NDIS Pricing Arrangements & Price Limits.

What is NDIS Plan Management?

NDIS Plan Management is a funded support that handles the financial administration of your NDIS plan. A registered Plan Manager pays your provider invoices, keeps your financial records, claims funds from the NDIA on your behalf, and gives you a real-time view of your remaining budget. You stay in control of who you use and when — the Plan Manager just does the paperwork. As of December 2024, approximately 50% of the 660,000+ active NDIS participants use Plan Management, making it the most popular funding management option (Source: NDIS Quarterly Report Q2 2024–25).

How does NDIS Plan Management work?

When you receive NDIS-funded supports, your providers send their invoices to your Plan Manager instead of to you. The Plan Manager checks each invoice against your plan budget and the NDIS Pricing Arrangements, claims the funds from the NDIA portal, and pays the provider — typically within 2–5 business days. You see every transaction in real time through a portal or app, and you never have to handle claims or paperwork yourself.

Is NDIS Plan Management free?

Yes. Plan Management is funded as a separate line item in your NDIS plan under "Improved Life Choices." It does not draw from your Core, Capacity Building, or Capital budgets. There is no out-of-pocket cost to you — the NDIA pays the Plan Manager directly. You simply ask your planner or LAC to include Plan Management in your plan.

What is the difference between self-managed, plan-managed, and NDIA-managed?

Self-managed means you receive funds directly and pay providers yourself, with full record-keeping responsibilities. NDIA-managed means the NDIA pays providers directly, but you can only use registered providers. Plan-managed sits in the middle: a registered Plan Manager handles invoices and claims, you can use both registered and non-registered providers, and you have no paperwork burden.

Can I use any provider with Plan Management?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of Plan Management is that you can use both NDIS-registered and non-registered providers, as long as the support is consistent with your plan goals and within the NDIS Pricing Arrangements. This gives you much wider choice than NDIA-managed funding, which is restricted to registered providers only.

How do I get Plan Management included in my NDIS plan?

Ask your NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to include "Improved Life Choices — Plan Management" in your plan during your planning meeting. If your current plan does not include it, you can request a plan review or a change of circumstances to have it added. The NDIA recognises that Plan Management increases participant choice and control.
