Where and When to Lodge Your Access Request
Knowing who to send your request to is the first crucial step. Your access request for new or changed supports should be submitted directly to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). You can do this via the NDIS myplace portal, by email, or by post.
Your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Early Childhood Partner can be a valuable guide in this process. They can help you understand what evidence you might need and how to frame your request, but they do not make the final decision. For complex requests like Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), you may also work with support coordinators or therapists to gather the right reports.
Timing is important. You should submit an access request when there is a significant and permanent change in your support needs. Common triggers include:
- A new diagnosis or a significant change in your existing disability.
- A change in your living situation that affects your support needs.
- After a plan review where your current funding is clearly not meeting your goals.
- When an assessment (like an OT functional assessment) recommends a new support.
Don't wait for your annual plan review if your situation has changed dramatically. Proactively requesting supports ensures your plan remains relevant to your life.
