Rights snapshot: what consent, privacy & choice mean

As an NDIS participant, you have rights that guide how support is delivered. Consent means you agree to supports and personal care before they happen, including changes to your plan goals or new services. Privacy means your personal information (and how it’s used) is protected, shared only when necessary and with the right approvals. Choice means you can decide how, when, and who supports you—within the limits of what’s funded in your plan.

Consent should never be assumed. Providers should explain what they will do, why, any options available, and possible risks. If you feel pressured, unsure, or not fully informed, you can ask questions and say “not today” or “not that way”. You can also withdraw consent at any time during support. If your situation changes, you can request a review of your supports and how they are delivered.

Your privacy includes how staff collect, store, and share your information, including incident reports and health details. Good providers use secure systems, discuss information only with people who need to know, and tell you what’s being recorded. If you’re using plan management, your invoices and service details may be handled through MyMoney NDIS (www.planmanager.net.au)—this is for managing funding, not for giving others access to your private information beyond what’s required.

Key takeaway: You have the right to say yes or no—your consent, privacy, and choices should be respected every step of the way.

When choosing or changing providers, compare how they approach consent, privacy, and your day-to-day choices. My Care Finders can help you compare providers and ask the right questions, so you feel confident the service matches what matters to you. For example, ask whether they support you to choose support times, involve you in decisions, and explain how they protect your information.

  • Consent: ask, agree, and you can change your mind
  • Privacy: your information is protected and shared only when needed
  • Choice: you guide how supports work for your life
