Rights at a Provider: Consent, Safety & Complaints
Know what you can expect—and what to do if it doesn’t happen
Your rights in the moment: consent, choice & respectful care
Your rights in the moment: consent, choice & respectful care
In every NDIS support session, you have the right to be asked for consent and to choose what happens to you. Consent means you agree to a specific support, at a specific time, in a specific way. If something changes (for example, the support staff want to do something different, or a task feels unsafe), you can pause and ask questions before you say yes. You can also say “no” or “not today” without it affecting your access to supports.
Choice is more than choosing a provider. It’s also about how supports are delivered. Ask about options and alternatives: what will happen, how long it takes, who will be there, and what you need to feel comfortable and safe. Good providers explain things clearly, respect your preferences, and treat your communication style with dignity. If you use a plan manager, you can check how billing works through MyMoney NDIS (www.planmanager.net.au) to help you understand what supports were funded and how they may be recorded.
Key takeaway: You can stop, ask, and choose during the support—not just at the start.
Respectful care includes privacy, respectful language, and taking your identity, culture, goals and routines seriously. If you’re uncomfortable, feel pressured, or think consent wasn’t properly captured, speak up straight away. You can ask the staff member to repeat the options, request a different approach, or ask for the supervisor/manager to be involved. If needed, you can raise the issue as a complaint or request a review of how consent is collected and documented.
If you’re comparing providers, use My Care Finders to help you check what different providers offer and how they handle consent, safety, and participant choice. A provider that listens will help you feel in control, not rushed. When you’re confident your rights are respected, you’re more likely to get supports that truly fit your life.
