When you need a budget change (and when you don’t)

Sometimes you can keep your plan the same, and other times you’ll need a budget change mid-plan. In general, you should consider a change when your support needs have changed, a new support type is needed, or a service you relied on can no longer be delivered in the way your plan assumes. Plan-managed supports can also be adjusted if your provider arrangement changes (for example, different hours, a different provider, or a new service agreement) and the costs no longer match what’s in your budget.

You usually don’t need a budget change for small timing issues, minor shifts in how often you attend, or when you’re still getting the same support type at a similar cost. For example, if a therapy session is moved to a different day but the number of sessions and the cost stay consistent, you may be able to use your existing budget without requesting anything. If you’re unsure, ask your plan manager to check your available funds and current invoices before you escalate to an official change.

Before you request a budget change, review your spending and future needs in MyMoney NDIS (www.planmanager.net.au). Look for patterns: are you running out because you increased hours, or because you’re paying different rates? Then compare options with My Care Finders if you need alternatives—this can help you confirm whether another provider can deliver the same outcomes within your existing budget.

Key takeaway: Request a budget change when the support you need or the cost to deliver it has meaningfully changed—not for minor scheduling changes.

  • You may need a budget change if: your hours/attendance changes, you need a new support category, you’re switching from one support type to another, or provider pricing has increased.
  • You may not need a budget change if: services are rescheduled, the support type remains the same, or you can manage within current funds through normal plan management.
