Start Here: Why NDIS words matter

If you’re new to the NDIS, the words can feel like a whole different language. But the good news is: most NDIS terms aren’t meant to confuse you—they’re meant to make sure everyone works to the same rules. When you understand the basic language, it’s easier to ask questions, compare options, and get services that match what you need.

Some words sound similar but mean different things. For example, “support” is not the same as “funding,” and “provider” is not the same as “plan manager.” Even small differences can affect what you can buy, how it’s delivered, and who handles invoices. This matters when you’re choosing allied health supports, personal care, or help to get out and about.

When you’re talking with providers, always listen for what the term means in plain English. A provider might say they can help with “daily living,” but you’ll want to clarify: What tasks does that include? How often? Where does it take place? If you use plan management, you may also want to check how costs and invoices are handled through MyMoney NDIS (www.planmanager.net.au). Using a plan manager can make things smoother, but you still need to understand what you’re agreeing to.

Key takeaway:

Good NDIS decisions come from understanding the words—so you can ask better questions and compare providers fairly.

My Care Finders can help you compare providers by putting information side-by-side in clearer terms. When you see a word you don’t know, don’t guess—ask the provider (or check with My Care Finders) and request the details in everyday language.
