What “approved” really means (and what it doesn’t)

Being approved under the NDIS means your access request was accepted and you can use your plan to fund supports. It does not automatically mean you’ll get specific services from any provider you choose, or that every support you want is guaranteed. Your plan funding is limited to what’s written in your participant plan, including the types of supports and the capacity building or core supports categories where applicable.

“Approved” also doesn’t mean supports are instant. You may still need to arrange services, confirm eligibility for particular providers, and make sure the support matches what your plan says. Providers may also assess your needs, confirm availability, and agree on how supports will be delivered (for example, goals, frequency, supports coordination arrangements, or assistive technology setup). If you’re plan managed, you’ll usually use MyMoney NDIS (www.planmanager.net.au) to help manage invoices—approval is separate from paying for services.

When people say “approved,” they sometimes mix it up with “provider approved.” Providers generally need to be able to deliver supports and meet NDIS practice standards, but you still have choices. You can compare options, ask questions, and request quotes or service proposals. A practical way to reduce the risk of a poor match is to use My Care Finders to compare providers and services against your goals and plan.

Key takeaway: Approval means you’re in the NDIS and can access funding—but you still need to plan, choose providers, and match services to what’s in your plan.

  • Do: check your plan for funding categories, support types, and any stated limits.
  • Do: confirm the provider can deliver the exact support in your plan and at the schedule you need.
  • Don’t: assume every provider will be suitable or that funding will cover everything you ask for.
  • Don’t: wait for “approval” to start—start by mapping supports to your goals and booking where you can.
