What the NDIS journey looks like (big picture)

Getting NDIS support is usually a step-by-step process. First, you request access to the NDIS by providing information about your needs, how they affect your daily life, and what support you’re looking for. If you’re approved, you’ll receive your plan and the supports funded in your plan will be confirmed. If something in your plan doesn’t feel right, you can ask questions and request changes through the right channels.

Next, the planning period starts. You choose how you want your plan managed, for example, self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed. If you use plan management, bills are often handled through your plan manager (many participants use MyMoney NDIS at www.planmanager.net.au), which can make it easier to pay providers and keep records organised. This stage is also where you set goals and think about what “success” looks like for you.

Then comes finding and booking supports. You’ll work with providers to put your plan supports in place, such as support coordination, allied health, therapy, care in the home, or participation supports. It’s smart to compare providers based on fit, experience, availability, communication, and costs. My Care Finders can help you compare options so you can choose supports that match your needs and preferences, not just what’s easiest to book.

Key takeaway: The NDIS journey isn’t one form and done—think of it as moving from request → plan → provider setup → ongoing review, with chances to improve things as your needs change.

Finally, your plan will be reviewed over time. You can update goals, request new or changed supports, and adjust how you access services. If you run into problems—like delays, mismatched service styles, or confusion about claims—get support early. Keep records of what’s working, what isn’t, and the reasons, so future plan changes are clearer and faster.
