1) Quick map: supports vs goals (plain-English version)

Think of your NDIS plan like a roadmap. Your goals tell you where you want to get to (for example, “I want to live more independently” or “I want to work or study”). Your supports are the tools and services that help you move towards those goals. When you’re choosing what to ask for, start by writing your goal in everyday words, then ask: “What support would make this easier or possible?”

A quick way to match supports to goals is to use this simple map: daily life supports for things you do each day; skills and learning supports for building independence (like budgeting, personal care routines, social skills, or using technology); community and participation supports for getting out and doing things; and support coordination to help you understand your plan and organise services. If you’re not sure what category something fits into, My Care Finders can help you compare support options and ask the right questions of providers.

Also consider how your plan is managed. If you have plan-managed supports, you may use MyMoney NDIS (www.planmanager.net.au) to help with paying invoices and keeping track of costs, which can make it easier to trial supports and adjust based on what’s working. If you’re budget-sensitive, ask providers for what’s included, how progress is measured, and what changes you can request if the support isn’t helping.

Key takeaway: Don’t ask for “more services” first. Ask for supports that link clearly to one or more of your goals.

When you prepare for your review or provider meetings, bring a one-page “goal → support → outcome” list. For example: Goal (participate in my local community more) → Support (community access with a support worker) → Outcome (attend the same activity weekly and feel confident using public transport). For comparing providers, My Care Finders can assist you with practical questions to check quality, availability, and fit—so you’re not guessing.

  • Goal: what you want to be able to do more of or do better
  • Support: the specific type of help that builds capability or reduces barriers
  • Outcome: what progress looks like in real life (time, frequency, confidence, independence)
