NDIS Support Requests: Plain-Language Starter Pack
From “I need help” to booked supports—without the overwhelm
What counts as a “support request” (and what doesn’t)
What counts as a “support request” (and what doesn’t)
A “support request” is when you ask for an NDIS support or service to be provided as part of your plan. It can be a new request (for example, “I need help to get to appointments”) or a request for a change (for example, “Can we increase my cleaning hours?”). It should be clear about what you want, when you need it, and any details that help the provider meet your needs. You can also include requests to review how supports are working, such as asking for different supports because your goals or circumstances have changed.
Support requests usually include things like personal care, household tasks, transport arrangements, therapy sessions, support coordination, and assistive technology—whether you manage with plan management, agency management, or self-management. If you use plan management, you may also need to send information to help process the supports through MyMoney NDIS (www.planmanager.net.au) (for example, the provider’s invoicing requirements and agreed start dates). This is still a “support request” when it’s about getting your funded supports delivered.
Some things are not support requests. These include general questions like “How much do you charge?” (unless the answer is needed to start a funded support), chasing up paperwork that doesn’t affect service delivery, or asking for non-NDIS items that aren’t part of your plan. Also, requests that are mainly complaints about service quality may be handled through a complaints process rather than as a new support request—though you can ask for a change to supports if the issue impacts your outcomes. If you’re comparing options, My Care Finders can help you review and compare providers before you put in a request.
Key takeaway: If your request is asking for an NDIS-funded support (or a change to it) to help you meet your goals, it counts. If it’s just a general question or unrelated admin, it usually doesn’t.
If you’re unsure, write down your request in plain language: what you need, when you need it, and why it helps your goals. This makes it easier for your provider (and plan manager, if relevant) to understand what’s being asked.
