The Foundation: Understanding What Makes a Strong Request

A successful NDIS request starts with a clear understanding of what the NDIS needs to see. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) looks for evidence that your requested supports are reasonable and necessary for your disability and directly help you pursue your goals. This isn't just about stating what you want; it's about demonstrating why you need it.

Your request must be built on three pillars: your goals, evidence of your disability-related needs, and how the support addresses those needs. Start by revisiting the goals in your plan. Every support you request should have a clear line back to one or more of these goals. For example, if your goal is 'to build my capacity to live independently,' a request for occupational therapy to learn daily living skills would be a direct link.

Common failure point: Vague or generic requests like 'I need support' without specifics. Instead, articulate the exact support (e.g., 'weekly support from a support worker for 4 hours to assist with grocery shopping and meal preparation'), explain how your disability creates this need, and show how it will help you work toward your stated goal.
