Before You Search: Get Crystal Clear on Your Needs

The most important step in finding a great provider happens before you even start looking. Taking time to get clear on exactly what you need will save you hours of frustration and lead to better matches.

We recommend writing a simple, one-page "Support Needs Summary" for yourself. This isn't a formal document for the NDIA; it's a personal guide to keep your search focused. Your template should include:

  • My Goals & Outcomes: In plain language, what do you want to achieve? (e.g., "I want to learn to cook three simple meals independently," or "I need to build my confidence to catch the bus to my friend's house").
  • Supports Required: List the specific support categories (e.g., Assistance with Daily Life, Improved Daily Living skills, Community Participation).
  • Ideal Schedule: What days and times work best for you? Be as specific as possible.
  • Communication & Other Needs: Do you prefer a certain communication style? Are there specific cultural, gender, or accessibility considerations?

Having this written down turns a vague feeling of what you want into a clear checklist. It empowers you to assess providers against your criteria, not theirs.
