What ‘approved’ actually means (and what it doesn’t)

When the NDIS says something is “approved”, it means your plan or funding category has been written to include the support. In practice, it’s not a promise that you’ll receive services immediately, with any provider, at any time, or in exactly the way you originally imagined. Approval is mainly about permission and funding, not a guarantee of availability.

Approval also doesn’t mean a provider can just bill however they like. Your provider (or therapist) must generally deliver services that match your goals, be related to your assessed needs, and follow the NDIS rules for documentation and evidence. If you’re using plan management (for example, with MyMoney NDIS via www.planmanager.net.au), they often help check invoices and ensure supports are being claimed correctly. This can help prevent payment delays, but it still depends on the provider recording the right details.

What “approved” does not mean: you automatically get unlimited sessions, you don’t have to book, you won’t be asked for updates, or you won’t ever need to change something if your needs or circumstances shift. Some supports may require reasonable and necessary checks, reasonable timeframes, or review at plan renewal. If your circumstances change mid-plan, you may need to request a plan review or variation through the proper channels.

Key takeaway: Approval unlocks funding—getting real support still depends on matching your plan to an appropriate provider, proper bookings, and correct claiming.

If you’re unsure what’s actually included in your plan, or what providers can offer within it, use My Care Finders to compare options. We can help you look at provider experience, what they say they deliver, and how they typically work with participants—so you spend less time guessing and more time receiving the right supports.
