Start With Your Plan: Get Clear on What You're Looking For

The fastest way to find a good provider is to know exactly what you need before you start searching. Grab your NDIS plan and write down four things.

  • Your goals. What do you actually want to achieve this plan? More independence at home, getting out more, building skills, finding work, better health and wellbeing. Providers should be able to explain how their support connects to those goals.
  • The type of support. Core supports cover everyday things like help around the house, personal care, transport and consumables. Capacity building supports cover things like therapy, skills development and support coordination. Knowing which category you're using helps you filter your search.
  • How your funding is managed. If you are self-managed, you can choose any provider and pay them yourself. If you are plan-managed, your plan manager pays providers for you. If you are NDIA-managed, you generally need to use providers who are registered with the NDIS Commission. This single detail shapes your shortlist.
  • Where and when. Suburb, travel distance, days, times and how often. Reliable, consistent support usually matters more than a flashy website.

It also helps to know that the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (often called the price guide) sets the maximum price for many supports. You are entitled to see clear pricing and a written service agreement before support starts, so you can check that what you're being charged matches what was agreed.

Write your list down and keep it handy. Every conversation you have with a provider should be measured against it — not against how convincing their sales pitch is.
