Your Funding & Your Options: Plan-Managed vs Self-Managed

Your first step is understanding how your NDIS funding type affects which providers you can use. This is crucial for a successful search.

If you are plan-managed: You have the most flexibility. You can use any provider, as long as they are a registered business with an ABN and provide a valid tax invoice. Your plan manager (like MyMoney by Local Knowledge Pty Ltd) pays these invoices directly from your NDIS funds. This opens up a wider pool, including many excellent independent therapists and support workers.

If you are self-managed: You can also use any provider with an ABN, but you are responsible for paying invoices yourself and then claiming reimbursement from the NDIA. This requires more administration and upfront cash flow.

If you are NDIA-managed: You can only use providers who are NDIS-registered. This limits your choices. Here is where a Support Coordinator (if funded in your plan) becomes invaluable. They have extensive networks and can help you navigate the registered provider landscape to find the right fit.

Knowing your management type helps you filter your search effectively from the very beginning.
