Start With Your Goals: What Therapeutic Supports Actually Do

Therapeutic supports are the allied health and therapy services that help you build skills, stay well and take part in everyday life. They are usually delivered by qualified professionals such as occupational therapists, speech pathologists, physiotherapists, psychologists, counsellors, dietitians, exercise physiologists and behaviour support practitioners.

In an NDIS plan, therapy is most often funded under Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living, because the focus is on building your skills and independence over time. Some supports that help you maintain your current function may be funded in other ways, depending on what your plan says and what is reasonable and necessary for you.

Before you start searching, spend ten minutes writing down three things:

  • Your goals. What do you want to be able to do more of? For example: communicate more easily, get dressed independently, manage anxiety, build strength, or join a community activity.
  • The type of support. Which profession is most likely to help with that goal? If you are not sure, that is a great question for your GP, your support coordinator or your Local Area Coordinator.
  • Your practical needs. Do you prefer in-person sessions, home visits or telehealth? Do you need an interpreter, a particular cultural background, a female or male worker, or sessions outside school or work hours?

If your child is under nine, the early childhood approach is usually the starting point, and your early childhood partner can help you connect with the right supports.

Having this list ready means every conversation you have with a provider is about your goals, not just their availability. It also helps you notice quickly whether a service is genuinely a good fit.
