Finding and Comparing NDIS Supports in Wollongong
A practical, participant-first guide to searching, shortlisting and choosing supports with confidence
Start With Your Plan: What You Are Actually Looking For
The best support searches begin with your plan, not with a list of names. Before you look anywhere, spend ten minutes getting clear on what you need. This makes comparing options much easier — and helps you avoid paying for things your plan does not cover.
Read your plan in plain language
Your NDIS plan sets out funding across a few broad areas. Most people find their day-to-day supports sit in Core funding, which covers things like assistance with daily life, social and community participation, and transport. Capacity Building funding is about building skills and independence over time, and Capital funding covers items like equipment or home modifications.
Within those areas you will see support categories and a budget for each. Your plan also states how your funding is managed — self-managed, plan-managed, or NDIA-managed. This matters because it affects which providers you can use.
- Self-managed: you pay invoices yourself and claim back. You have the widest choice of providers, including some who are not registered.
- Plan-managed: a plan manager pays providers for you and keeps your budget records. You can usually use registered and some non-registered providers.
- NDIA-managed: the NDIS pays providers directly, and you generally need to use providers registered with the NDIS Commission.
Write a simple wish list
Jot down the practical things that matter to you. For example: someone to help me get ready in the mornings, three days a week, before 9am; a support worker who can drive me to swimming; someone who understands Auslan; a provider who can start within a month.
Also write down your non-negotiables — the things that would make support feel right, such as consistent workers, clear communication, or a support worker who respects your routines and culture. This list becomes your measuring stick when you start comparing.
You are the expert on your own life. Providers are there to fit around you, not the other way around.
