Start With Your Plan: Knowing What You're Looking For

Before you search for any provider, it helps to know what you're actually looking for. Your NDIS plan sets out funding in categories — usually Core Supports (everyday help such as personal care, transport and consumables), Capacity Building (supports that build your skills and independence, like therapy or support coordination) and sometimes Capital Supports (equipment and home modifications). Most funding is flexible within a category, which means you often have a say in how it's used.

Write down three things before you look at a single provider:

  • The support you need — for example, help with showering and dressing, support to get to appointments, or speech therapy.
  • When and where — which days and times suit you, and whether you'd like support at home, out in the community, or at a venue in Ulverstone.
  • How your funding is managed — self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed. This affects who pays invoices and which providers you can use.

It also helps to name your goals in plain words. "I want to get to my weekly bowls group" or "I want to cook dinner myself twice a week" are perfectly good goals. They give you a clear yardstick when you're comparing what different providers offer.

If any of this feels unclear, you don't have to work it out alone. Your support coordinator, local area coordinator (LAC) or plan manager can walk you through your budget and explain what each category can pay for. Understanding your plan is the first real step towards genuine choice and control.
