Start With Your Plan: Know What You're Looking For

Before you open a search page, it helps to know what your NDIS plan actually funds. Your plan is built around your goals — things like building daily living skills, getting out and about, or finding and keeping a job. The funding that supports those goals sits in a few broad groups.

  • Core supports — everyday help such as assistance with daily life, transport, consumables and assistance with social and community participation.
  • Capacity building supports — supports that help you build skills and independence, such as support coordination, therapy and employment supports.
  • Capital supports — higher-cost items like assistive technology or home and vehicle modifications.

Some supports are stated, meaning your plan names the specific support or amount. Others are flexible, which means you can choose how to spend that funding within the category to meet your goals. Knowing which is which helps you search with confidence and avoid confusion later.

Write a one-page wish list

Keep it simple. On a single page, note:

  1. The support you need, in plain words — for example, "help with morning routine, weekdays" or "someone to come with me to the gym".
  2. When and where you need it — days, times, and how far a worker would need to travel.
  3. What matters to you — a worker who shares your interests, a female worker, someone who understands your culture or communication style.
  4. How your plan is managed — self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed. This affects how invoices are paid, not who you can choose.

This page becomes your shortlist filter. When you contact a provider, you can read straight from it, and you will quickly notice who listens and responds clearly.
