Start with your plan: know what you're looking for

Before you open a single website, spend twenty minutes with your NDIS plan. It is the map for everything that follows. Look at your goals first — the everyday things you want to do more of, learn, or feel safer doing. Then look at the funding categories that sit underneath them.

Most plans are built around three budget types:

  • Core supports — everyday help such as assistance with daily life, transport, consumables and social and community participation.
  • Capacity building supports — things that build skills over time, such as therapy, support coordination or employment supports.
  • Capital supports — higher-cost items like assistive technology or home modifications.

Each budget has rules about what it can pay for. Your plan also tells you how your funding is managed — self-managed, plan-managed, or managed by the NDIA. That matters, because it affects who pays invoices and how quickly a provider gets paid.

Write a short 'good week' list

In plain words, jot down what a good week looks like. For example: someone to help me get ready in the mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or a support worker to come to the library with me. Be specific about days, times, locations and the kind of person you'd feel comfortable with.

This list does two jobs. It turns a vague search into a clear one, and it becomes the checklist you compare providers against later. It also reminds you of something important: you are in charge of who provides your supports. You can ask questions, say no, and change your mind.

Tip: keep your plan, your 'good week' list and your questions in one folder — paper or digital. You'll use them at every step.
