The Plain-English Breakdown: What Each Service Actually Does

Many NDIS participants find the difference between Support Coordination and Plan Management confusing, but it's crucial for using your funding effectively. Think of them as two different types of helpers on your NDIS journey.

Support Coordination is about connecting you with supports and building your skills. A Support Coordinator is your guide and problem-solver. Their main jobs are:

  • Helping you understand your plan and connect with community, mainstream, and funded supports.
  • Building your confidence and skills to navigate the NDIS and manage your supports.
  • Solving problems and addressing barriers that stop you from using your plan.
  • Helping you prepare for plan reviews and advocating for your needs.
  • They cannot: Pay your providers or manage your NDIS budget.

Plan Management is about handling the money and paperwork. A Plan Manager is your bookkeeper and payment service. Their main jobs are:

  • Paying your support providers from your NDIS funds.
  • Keeping track of your budget and sending you regular statements.
  • Helping you use both NDIS-registered and non-registered providers (giving you more choice).
  • Managing the financial administration so you don't have to.
  • They cannot: Book your services, find providers for you, or provide direct support coordination.

In short: Support Coordination helps you find and set up supports. Plan Management helps you pay for those supports.
