Who Does What? Separating the Three Key Roles

Understanding these three distinct roles is the first step to taking control of your NDIS plan. Think of them as a team with different jobs.

1. Support Coordinator

Their job is to help you find, connect with, and set up your supports. They are your ‘navigator’ and ‘linker’. For example, your Support Coordinator might:

  • Help you find and interview a new support worker or therapist.
  • Liaise with providers to make sure services fit your plan goals.
  • Help you understand your plan and build your confidence to use it.
  • Develop a system or roster for your supports.

2. Plan Manager

Their job is to handle the money. They pay your providers on your behalf from your NDIS funds. For example, your Plan Manager will:

  • Receive invoices from your support workers, therapists, or other providers.
  • Check the invoice is correct and matches your plan budget.
  • Pay the provider directly and claim the funds from the NDIA.
  • Give you regular budget statements so you can track your spending.

3. The Provider (Who You Pay)

This is the person or organisation that delivers the support or service to you. They are your support worker, occupational therapist, assistive technology supplier, or cleaner. They do the work and then send an invoice to be paid—either to your Plan Manager or to you if you are self-managing.
