Understanding Your Budget: Spotting Overlap and Avoiding Double-Dipping

Your NDIS plan breaks funding into three support budget categories: Core, Capacity Building, and Capital. A common challenge is that similar supports can sometimes be claimed from different budget lines, but you must avoid 'double-dipping' – using two budgets for the same support or the same period of time.

For example, support worker assistance to attend a social activity could potentially be funded from both your Core - Assistance with Social and Community Participation and your Capacity Building - Increased Social and Community Participation budgets. However, you cannot claim the same hours from both. You need a clear logic: use Core for the direct support (the worker's time) and Capacity Building for the skill-building aspect (like a program fee or travel training).

Key rule: Every support you purchase must align with one specific, approved goal in your plan. If you're unsure which budget category to use, ask your provider or plan manager before the service. A good question is: "Can you explain which NDIS budget line this invoice will be claimed from and how it links to my plan goals?" This clarity prevents confusion and protects your funding.
