Step 1: How to Actually Read Your Plan Document

Your NDIS plan is your roadmap to supports, but it can look confusing at first. Let's break it down. Start by looking for the section titled 'Your NDIS Plan' or 'Statement of Participant Supports'. This is where the funding details are.

Focus on the funding lines. These are the individual amounts allocated for specific support categories, like 'Assistance with Daily Life' or 'Improved Daily Living'. Each line will show:

  • The support category name (e.g., Core - Assistance with Social & Community Participation).
  • A dollar amount (your budget for that category).
  • Often, a statement of supports describing what the funding is for, like "This funding is for support worker assistance to access community activities."

Remember the 'reasonable and necessary' rule at a practical level: the funding is there to help you pursue your goals. When reading a line, ask yourself: "Does this support help me with a goal in my plan?" If yes, you're on the right track. The 'amounts' are the maximum you can claim from that category within your plan period.
