How to Request NDIS Support: Your Step-by-Step Rights Guide

Laying the Foundation: What You Need Before You Request
Before you even fill out an Access Request form, preparation is key. A strong request is built on clear evidence that connects your needs directly to your NDIS goals. Start by gathering recent reports from your allied health professionals (like OTs, speech pathologists, or psychologists). These reports should describe your current functional capacity, not just a diagnosis. They must explain what you can and can't do and how this impacts your daily life.
Next, get clear on your goals. The NDIS funds ‘reasonable and necessary’ supports to help you achieve your goals. Write down 1-3 short-term goals. For example: "I want to improve my personal care so I can shower independently," or "I need to build my skills to look for part-time work." Your requested support must show a clear link to achieving these goals.
Finally, consider your safety and any risks if you don't get the support. Are there risks to your health, wellbeing, or safety? Document these. This preparation gives you a solid evidence base, making it much harder for the NDIA to say no without a good reason.
