What is an Access Request and When Do You Need One?

An Access Request is your formal application to join the NDIS. It's the first step to getting the funding and support you need to live your life. You need to make this request if you are applying for the NDIS for the first time, or if your circumstances have changed significantly and you need to re-enter the scheme.

Think of it as telling your story to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The goal is to demonstrate that you meet the access requirements set out in the NDIS Act:

  • Age: You must be under 65 when you first apply.
  • Residency: You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
  • Disability: You must have a permanent and significant disability that substantially reduces your functional capacity in one or more key areas (like communication, mobility, self-care, or social interaction).
  • Early Intervention: For children under 7, you may need to show that early intervention supports will substantially reduce your child's future needs.

This request is not about asking for specific items or hours of support yet. It's about proving you are eligible for the scheme itself. Once you're in, you'll work on your plan.
