Step 1 & 2: From Goals to Budgets

Your NDIS plan is built around your goals. The first step is to translate those big-picture goals into the specific supports you need day-to-day.

Start by asking: "To work towards my goal, what help do I need Monday to Sunday?" List everything, from personal care and household tasks to therapy sessions and social activities.

Now, match each support to the correct NDIS budget category. Think of it in plain English:

  • Core Supports are for everyday help and activities. This covers support workers, help at home, transport, and consumables.
  • Capacity Building Supports are for skills development. This includes therapies, training, employment support, and health & wellbeing activities.
  • Capital Supports are for one-off, bigger-ticket items like assistive technology (e.g., a wheelchair) or home modifications.

For example, if your goal is "to live more independently," your supports might include: a support worker for showering (Core), an occupational therapist to recommend home equipment (Capacity Building), and funding for a shower chair (Capital).
