Self-Managed NDIS: finding the right providers
Maximum choice, on your terms
Self-managing your NDIS funding gives you the greatest choice and control of any option — you can work with almost any provider, registered or not. This guide covers what that freedom means in practice and how to find and shortlist the right supports without the overwhelm.
What self-management gives you
When you self-manage, you receive claims from the NDIA, pay your providers directly and keep the records. The trade-off is a little more admin — but in return you get the widest possible provider choice and the freedom to design supports around your goals. Only agency-managed participants are limited to registered providers; as a self-manager, the whole market is open to you.
- Use registered AND unregistered providers — the widest choice available
- Negotiate your own agreements and rates within the price limits
- Design supports flexibly around your own goals
- Pay providers directly and manage your own budget
- Mix self-management with a plan manager for part of your plan if you want
How to find providers when you self-manage
Browse by location and support type
Search the free directory by state, suburb and support category to see who operates near you. Self-management means you are not limited to registered providers — you can consider the full market.
Check fit before you commit
Look at qualifications, experience, availability and fees, and ask how the service matches your goals. Get the service agreement in writing so both sides are clear.
Negotiate and manage on your terms
As a self-manager you can negotiate rates within the NDIS price limits, pay providers directly and keep your own records. You stay in control of every dollar.
Rather not do the searching yourself?
Tell us what you are looking for and our team will personally shortlist best-fit providers for you — completely free, with no obligation. We do the legwork; you stay in control and make the final choice. We never rank providers or charge them for placement.
My Care Finders is an independent Australian directory of NDIS-registered providers and Plan Managers, sourced from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission Register. Our directory and CareMatch service are free for participants. This guide is general information, not financial or personal advice — always check what suits your own plan and goals.
Frequently asked questions
Honest answers for self-managed NDIS participants finding providers.
Can self-managed NDIS participants use any provider?
Yes. Self-managed participants have the widest provider choice of any funding-management type. You can use both NDIS-registered and unregistered providers, and you can negotiate your own service agreements and rates, as long as you stay within the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits and spend in line with your plan goals.
How do I find NDIS providers as a self-managed participant?
Start by browsing a directory by state, suburb and support category, then check each provider’s qualifications, service fit, availability and fees before you shortlist. My Care Finders lists registered providers and Plan Managers across every Australian state for free. If you would rather not do the legwork, CareMatch is a free, no-obligation service where our team personally shortlists best-fit providers based on your needs — we do the searching, you make the choice.
Do self-managed participants have to use registered providers?
No. Only agency-managed (NDIA-managed) participants must use NDIS-registered providers. As a self-managed participant you may use unregistered providers as well. Registration can still be a useful signal when you are comparing options, but it is your choice.
What are my responsibilities when I self-manage?
You claim funds from the NDIA (usually through the myplace portal), pay your providers, and keep tax-compliant records in case of an audit. You are responsible for spending within your budget and plan goals and within the NDIS price limits. Many people self-manage part of their plan and use a plan manager or support coordinator for the rest.
How do I check a provider is right for me?
Confirm their qualifications and any relevant registrations, ask how their service matches your goals, check availability and fees, and get the agreement in writing. Our free guides on checking qualifications and the questions to ask a provider walk through exactly what to look for.
Can a self-managed participant still use a plan manager?
Yes. Plan management is a separate funded support you can request in your plan; it is free to participants and does not reduce your other budgets. Some people self-manage some supports and have a plan manager handle the invoices and claiming for the rest — you can mix management types in one plan.
