Know What Your NDIS Plan Covers
Learn how to read your NDIS plan and spot what funding is for.
Section 1: What an NDIS plan actually includes
Start with the goal and the funding
Your NDIS plan is designed to help you achieve outcomes that matter to you. The plan is not just a list of services; it connects your goals to the types of supports funded to help you work toward them. When you look at your plan, your first job is to find your outcomes (your “why”) and then match them to the support items (your “how”).
NDIS funding is organised in a few common ways. Many plans include support categories such as Core Supports, Capacity Building Supports, and sometimes Capital supports (only in limited cases). Your plan will also show how your funding is managed, such as whether you can use registered providers and whether you’re using plan-managed, NDIA-managed, or self-managed arrangements.
To make sense of it quickly, use this simple checklist:
- Find your outcomes: what changes do you want in daily life, work, study, community participation, health, or relationships?
- Check the funding category beside each support.
- Look for descriptions and limits: some supports specify hours, frequency, or conditions.
- Note the provider requirements: many supports require a registered NDIS provider.
Key takeaway: Your plan is outcome-based—supports are funded to help you achieve your goals, not just for any need you have.
